The need for training: While it has been conclusively demonstrated that psychometric tests significantly improve human resource decisions and result in productivity gains, such benefits can only be achieved by competent use of these complex instruments. Inappropriate use cannot only totally negate the benefits of using valid selection procedures but it can also have an adverse effect on staff motivation.

Competent use of psychometric instruments not only requires expertise in selecting, administering and scoring tests, but also the interpretation of the results within the assessment context.

Responsible and ethical use of tests requires an appreciation of the limitations of tests, how to integrate complex information and present the results to the test-taker and decision-maker alike. Not surprisingly, therefore, access to psychometric test materials is restricted to qualified users. In the UK the qualification system has been formulated by the professional body for Psychologists, the British Psychological Society (BPS). Psytech International offer the following BPS Verified Training Options:

Less time out of the office

Most providers will insist that you spend five days undertaking Level A and five days for Level B. This practice dates from when training courses were “approved” by a committee of the British Psychological Society before the introduction of the competency based Level A and B qualification. Now, all that is essential is that you demonstrate competence to a verified assessor, by whatever means you gained that competence. As the originator of Level A has stated repeatedly, it is the outputs not the inputs that count.

Less expense

Most discerning and cost conscious Level A/B prospective delegates will understandably shop around when making the important decision as to where and with whom to train. If you do so, you will find our course fees fall well below those of the nearest competitors. The one supplier that claims to offer the training free of charge will in fact require you to spend well over £2000 on their own products, effectively locking you in before you have been trained to determine what is really suitable for your needs. We provide excellent value without locking you in. While we would be delighted if you selected us as a supplier, you remain free to approach any publisher once you have successfully fulfilled the requirements of our programme.

Unbiased approach to occupational testing

Although we are providers of products, we aim to provide an unbiased overview of market and the options that are available to you. As Occupational Psychologists we are bound by a professional code of practice that requires us to provide unbiased advice. This does not mean that we will never refer to our own products but we won’t make claims that we are unable to support. On the course, we place considerable emphasis on providing delegates with a critical overview of what constitute the key criteria for evaluating tests and the myriad of claims that are made by purveyors of tests. We aim to provide you with both the competence and confidence to ensure that you make the right choices of assessment methods based on relevant evidence.

Practical exposure to Internet-testing

There is little doubt that the internet has revolutionized the use of psychometric testing. Any training in the area would inevitably need to address the challenges that this mode of assessment poses to professional practice and the quality of measurement. Psytech not only provide a free portal to a range of tests (www.practicetests.co.uk) but with (www.genesysonline.net) provide one of the most comprehensive choices of tests for both supervised and unsupervised administration. As such, we are in an excellent position to provide delegates with access to the full range of tests, all the latest research and objective overview of the risks and benefits of internet based testing.

Exposure to computer-based testing

Psytech’s GeneSys Integrated Assessment System is perhaps the best known windows based platform for the delivery of psychometric tests. Now in its 16th year with 1000’s of users worldwide, we have a sound basis on which to demonstrate how and where your computer can assist the testing process.

Free test manual downloads

Psytech are still perhaps the only publisher of tests providing free access to all its proprietary test manuals. We believe that it is critical that you are able to critically scrutinise the available evidence in support of a test that you are about to commit to. Some publishers will even insist that you are fully trained before you have access to the manual. In some cases this leads to unsuspecting delegates spending thousands of pounds to get trained in a measure that may be entirely unsuitable. Whether or not you are competent to evaluate all the supporting evidence (such as reliability and validity) before attending a course, almost all manuals should provide basic information about what the test measures, how long it takes to administer and its theoretical rationale that should be more than accessible to any prospective test user.
